The Amputee is a a short movie Lynch did (together with Frederick Elmes on camera) during his days at the American Film Institute. It shows a legless woman (played by Catherine Coulson) writing a letter.

It was done on film material that was given to Elmes for testing its quality, but Lynch convinced him to shoot a short movie, instaed of test pictures. The movie has never been shown anywhere outside the AFI.
